The Rishis (seers of truth) inquire within themselves:

What is the cause of this universe? Is it Brahman (the Supreme Reality)? Whence do we come? Why do we live? Where shall we at last find rest? Under whose command are we bound by the law of happiness and its opposite?

Time, space, law, chance, matter, primal energy, intelligence- none of these, nor a combination of these, can be the final cause of the universe, for they are effects, and exist to serve the soul. Nor can the individual soul be the cause, for being subject to the law of happiness and misery, it is not free.

The Rishis (seers of truth), absorbed in meditation, saw within themselves the ultimate Reality, the self-luminous Being, the one God, who dwells as the self-conscious power in all creatures. He is one without a second. Deep within all beings He dwells, hidden from sight by the coverings of the gunas – sattwa, Rajas, and Tamas. He presides over time, space, and all apparent causes.

Like oil in sesame seeds, butter in cream, water in the river-bed, fire in the tinder, the Self dwells within the soul. Realise Him through truthfulness and meditation.

Like butter in cream is the Self in everything. Knowledge of the Self is gained through meditation. The Self is Brahman (Supreme Reality). By Brahman is all ignorance destroyed.

Fire, though present in the firestick, is not perceived until one stick is rubbed against another. The Self is like that fire; it is realised in the body by meditation on the sacred syllable OM (AUM).

Let your body be the stick that is rubbed, the sacred syllable OM the stick that is rubbed against it. Thus shall you realise God, who is hidden within the body as fire is hidden within the wood.

He who is realised by transcending the world of cause and effect, in deep contemplation, is expressly declared by the scriptures to be the Supreme Brahman. He is the substance, all else the shadow. He is the imperishable.

The knowers of Brahman know Him as the one reality behind all that seems. For this reason they are devoted to Him. Absorbed in Him, they attain freedom from the wheel of birth, death and rebirth.

Matter is perishable. The Lord, the destroyer of ignorance, is imperishable, immortal. He is the one God, the Lord of the perishable and of all souls. By meditating in Him, by uniting oneself with Him, one ceases to be ignorant.

Know God, and all fetters will be loosed. Ignorance will vanish. Birth, death and rebirth will be no more. Meditate upon Him and transcend physical consciousness. Thus will you reach union with the Lord of the universe. But you must know this. Nothing further is there to know. Meditate, and you will realise that mind, matter, and Maya (the power that unites mind and matter) are but three aspects of Brahman, the one Reality.

To realise God ...

To realise God, first control the outgoing senses and harness the mind. Then meditate upon the light in the heart of the fire - meditate, that is, upon Pure Consciousness as distinct from the ordinary consciousness of the intellect. Thus the Self, the Inner Reality, may be seen behind physical appearance.

Control your mind so that the Ultimate reality, the self-luminous Lord, may be revealed. Strive earnestly for eternal bliss.

With the help of the mind and the intellect, keep the senses from attaching themselves to objects of pleasure. They will then be purified by the light of the Inner reality, and that light will be revealed.

The wise control their minds, and unite their hearts with the infinite, the omniscient, the all-pervading Lord. Only discriminating souls practice spiritual disciplines. Great is the glory of the self-luminous Being, the inner Reality.

Hear, all ye children of immortal bliss, also ye gods who dwell in the high heavens: Follow only in the footsteps of the illumined ones, and by continuous meditation merge both mind and intellect in the eternal Brahman. The glorious Lord will be revealed to you.

Control the vital force. Set fire to the Self within by the practice of meditation. Be drunk with the wine of divine love. Thus shall you reach perfection.

Be devoted to the eternal Brahman. Unite the light within you with the light of Brahman. Thus will the source of ignorance be destroyed, and you will rise above karma.

Sit upright, holding the chest, throat and head erect. Turn the senses and the mind inward to the lotus of the heart. Meditate on Brahman with the help of the syllable OM. Cross the fearful currents of the ocean of worldliness by means of the raft of Brahman – the sacred syllable OM.

With earnest effort hold the senses in check. Controlling the breath, regulate the vital activities. As a charioteer holds back his restive horses, so does a persevering aspirant hold back his mind.

Retire to a solitary place, such as a mountain cave or a sacred spot. The place must be protected from the wind and rain, and it must have a smooth, clean floor, free from pebbles and dust. It must not be damp, and it must be free from disturbing noises. It must be pleasing to the eye and quieting to the mind. Seated there, practice meditation and other spiritual exercises. As you practice meditation, you may see in vision forms resembling snow, crystals, smoke, fire, lightning, fireflies, the sun, the moon. These are signs that you are on your way to the revelation of Brahman.

As you become absorbed in meditation, you will realise that the Self is separate from the body and for this reason will not be affected by disease, old age or death.

The first signs of progress on the path of Yoga are health, a sense of physical lightness, clearness of complexion, a beautiful voice, an agreeable odour of the person, and freedom from craving.

As a soiled piece of metal, when it has been cleaned, shines brightly, so the dweller in the body, when he has realised the truth of the Self, loses his sorrow and becomes radiant with bliss.The yogi experiences directly the truth of Brahman by realising the light of the Self within. He is freed from all impurities – He is pure, the birthless, the bright.

He is the one God, present on the north, the east, the south and the west. He is the creator. He enters into all wombs. He alone is now born as all beings, and He alone is to be born as all beings in the future. He is within all persons as the inner Self, facing in all directions.

Let us adore the Lord, the luminous one, who is in fire, who is in water, who is in plants and trees, who pervades the whole universe. At the periods of creation and dissolution of the universe, He alone exists. Those who realise Him become immortal.

The Lord is one without a second. Within man, and within all other beings, He projects the universe, maintains it, and
withdraws it into Himself.

His eyes are everywhere; His face, His arms, His feet are in every place. Out of Himself He has produced the heavens and the earth, and with His arms and His wings He holds them together.

He is the origin and support of the gods. He is the Lord of all. He confers bliss and wisdom upon those who are devoted to Him. He destroys their sins and their sorrows.

He punishes those who break His laws. He sees all and knows all. May He endow us with good thoughts!

This vast universe is a wheel. Upon it are all creatures that are subject to birth and death and rebirth. Round and round it turns, and never stops. It is the wheel of Brahman. As long as the individual self thinks it is separate from Brahman, it revolves upon the wheel in bondage to the laws of birth, death and rebirth. But when through the grace of Brahman it realises its identity with Him, it revolves upon the wheel no longer. It achieves immortality.

The Lord supports this universe, which is made up of the perishable and the imperishable, the manifest and the unmanifest. The individual soul, forgetful of the Lord, attaches itself to pleasure and thus is bound. When it comes to the Lord, it is freed from all its fetters.

Mind and matter, master and servant- both have existed from beginnigless time. The Maya that unites them has also existed from beginningless time. When all three- mind, matter, and Maya- are known as one with Brahman, then is it realised that the Self is infinite and has no part in action. Then it is revealed that the Self is all.

O Lord, Thou hast revealed Thy sacred syllable OM, which is
one with Thee. In Thy hands it is a weapon with which to destroy ignorance. O protector of Thy devotees, do not conceal Thy benign person.

Thou art the Supreme Brahman. Thou art infinite. Thou hast assumed the forms of all creatures, remaining hidden in them. Thou prevadest all things. Thou art the one God of the universe. Those who realise Thee become immortal.

Said the great seer Svetasvatara:

I have known beyond all darkness, that great Person of golden effulgence. Only by knowing Him does one conquer death. There is no other way of escaping the wheel of birth, death and rebirth.There is nothing superior to Him, nothing different from Him, nothing subtler or greater than He. Alone He stands, changeless, self-luminous; He, the great one, fills this universe.

Though He fills this universe, He transcends it. He is untouched by its sorrows. He has no form. Those who know Him become immortal. Others remain in the depths of misery.

The Lord God, all-pervading and omnipresent, dwells in the
heart of all beings. Full of grace, He ultimately gives liberation to all creatures by turning their faces forward Himself.He is the innermost Self. He is the great Lord. He it is that reveals the purity within the heart by means of which He, who is pure Being, may be reached. He is the ruler. He is the great light, shining forever.

This great Being, assuming the form of the size of a thumb,
forever dwells in the heart of all creatures as their innermost Self. He can be known directly by the purified mind through spiritual discrimination. Knowing Him, men become immortal.

This great Being has a thousand heads, a thousand eyes, and a thousand feet. He envelopes the universe. Though transcendent, He is to be meditated upon as residing in the lotus of the heart, at the centre of the body, ten fingers above the navel.

He alone is all this- what has been and what shall be. He has become the universe, yet He remains forever changeless, and is the Lord of immortality.

Without organs of sense, yet reflecting the activities of the senses, He is the Lord and ruler of all.He is the friend and refuge of all. He resides in the body, the city of nine gates. He sports in the world and without in innumerable forms. He is the Master, the ruler of the whole world, animate and inanimate.

He moves fast, though without feet. He grasps everything, though without hands. He sees everything , though without eyes. He hears everything, though without ears. He knows all that is, but no one knows Him. He is called the Supreme, the Great One.

Subtler than the subtlest, greater than the greatest, the Self is hidden in the heart of all creatures. Through His grace a man loses his cravings, transcends grief, and realises Him as Brahman Supreme.

If the truth of these scriptures are meditated upon by a man in the highest degree devoted to God, and (devoted) to his guru (spiritual teacher) as to his God, they will shine forth. They will shine forth indeed!

The text in Section VI predicts the sinking of the City of Dwaravati. Section VII describes how the city of Dwarka was swallowed up by the ocean. Geological expertise can help determine the period when the city of Dwarka was lost beneath the ocean waves.

Vaisampayana said: The widows of the other heroes of the Bhoja, the Vrishni, and the Andhaka races, lordless now, that set out with Arjuna, numbered many millions.
That foremost of car-warriors, that conqueror of hostile towns, viz., the son of Pritha, escorted this vast procession of Vrishnis, which still abounded with wealth, and which looked like a veritable ocean.
After all the people had set out, the ocean, that home of sharks and alligators, flooded Dwarka, which still teemed with wealth of every kind, with its waters. Whatever portion of the ground was passed over, ocean immediately flooded over with his waters. Beholding this wonderful sight, the inhabitants of Dwarka walked faster and faster, saying, - "Wonderful is the course of fate! Dhananjaya (Arjuna), after abandoning Dwarka, proceeded by slow marches, causing the Vrishni women to rest in pleasant forest and mountains and by the sides of delightful streams.

© 2002 by Linda Moulton HoweFebruary 16, 2002Surat, India - A month ago in mid-January, marine scientists in India announced they had sonar images of square and rectangular shapes about 130 feet down off the northwestern coast of India in the Gulf of Khambhat (Cambay). Not only are their sonar shapes with 90-degree angles, the Indian Minister of Science and Technology ordered that the site be dredged. What was found has surprised archaeologists around the world and was the subject of a private meeting two weeks ago attended by the Indian Minister in charge of investigating the underwater site about thirty miles off the coast from Surat.An American who traveled to that private meeting was Michael Cremo, researcher in the history of archaeology for the Bhakti Vedanta Institute in India and author of the book Forbidden Archaeology. I talked with him today in India about the dredging operation, what the ocean engineers found and the implications of first carbon dating of artifacts at more than 9,000 years.

"Within the past few months, the engineers began some dredging operations there and they pulled up human fossil bones, fossil wood, stone tools, pieces of pottery and many other things that indicated that it indeed was a human habitation site that they had. And they were able to do more intensive sonar work there and were able to identify more structures. They appeared to have been laid out on the bank of a river that had been flowing from the Indian subcontinent out into that area.According to the news releases, they have done a radiocarbon testing on a piece of wood from the underwater site that is now yielding an age of 9,500 years which would place it near the end of the last Ice Age.Yes, those are the indications that are coming. There were actually two radiocarbon dates: one about 7500 years old and another about 9500 years old. The 9500 year old one seems to be the strongest one. That's the one they are going with. This was announced by Minister Joshi (Murli Manohar Joshi is Indian Minister for Ocean Technology) at this meeting I attended in Hyderabad, India. He said there is going to be more work going on. It's difficult because it's very difficult to see down there. There is a very swift current. So, it's going to have to be a pretty massive effort, but he said the government of India is willing to put the resources behind it to do whatever it takes to further confirm these discoveries.I also spoke in Hyderabad with an independent archaeologist not connected with the Indian government, but who has a deep interest in these discoveries and he says they are still going to have to send divers down there. Up to this point, they have not sent divers down. The information they have is based on the sonar readings and the dredging they have done. Eventually, they are going to have to find a way to get people down there to take a closer look at this. I think this effort is going to go on.

Now, another American archaeologist, Richard Meadows of Harvard University, is proposing there should be an international effort here. On the surface that sounds like a good idea, but it also may be an effort of American archaeologists and others to control the project. I don't think they want to see a civilization being as old as it appears to be according to these new finds at 9500 years ago. So, I would hope the Indian archaeologists and government would be very cautious about letting outsiders in there who might have a different agenda and who might try to control what gets let out about this very important discovery. It could be quite revolutionary.

Cultural Background of People At Underwater Site?

Even if we don't know what the cultural background of the people is, if it does happen to be a city that is 9500 years old, that is older than the Sumerian civilization by several thousand years. It is older than the Egyptian, older than the Chinese. So it would radically affect our whole picture of the development of urban civilization on this planet.

Now, if it further happens that additional research is able to identify the culture of the people who lived in that city that's now underwater, if it turns out they are a Vedic people - which I think is quite probable given the location of this off the coast of India - I think that would radically change the whole picture of Indian history which has basically been written by western archaeologists.

India's Vedic Culture - Was It Really Older Than 3500 Years?

The most archaic Sanskrit (Devanagari) is that of the Vedas, multiple books written in thousands of hymns and verses arranged in song cycles. The Vedas say that "God-men" brought Sanskrit to Earth men as a language of musical tones

When the Europeans first came there, they noticed that the people in India who had the Sanskrit language as the main language of their literature - they noticed that the European languages were similar (in word concepts), so that meant the Europeans and East Indians had to be related. The 19th Century scientists also noticed that the Sanskrit culture or Vedic culture, as it is sometimes called after the ancient Indian literature, Vedas, which means knowledge, so sometimes the ancient Indian culture is called the Vedic culture or Vedic civilization. The literature is called the Vedic literature. So, the scientists noticed that it appeared to be older than the European cultures. Since the European languages were related to the Indian language Sanskrit of the Vedas that could only mean that the European peoples had to have come out of India somehow and then gone to Europe with their languages that differentiated into Russian, English, Spanish, German and the rest of them. The European investigators didn't like that idea because it would have given the Vedic culture a position superior to their own. So, these early cities in the Indus Valley like Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro have been identified by archaeologists such as Richard Meadows and others as being non-Vedic. They think the Vedic culture came into India maybe 3500 years ago.Isn't that inconsistent with the concept of the Vedas of the Krishna character who comes and says the universe is teeming with life and appears to have knowledge about other habitations in the cosmos and is talking from an age that would go back at least 9,500 years?In these ancient Sanskrit writings, there is no hint at all that the culture came from anywhere else.And if they are the prime source and if the Vedic literature can be taken literally, then it implies that there were cities there inhabited at least several thousand years ago.

Yes, and there has been other research going on in that area. For example, the Rg Veda, which is one of the earliest Vedic literatures, talks about a mighty river called the Saraswati that flowed from the Himalayan mountains down to the Arabian Sea, down in that area of northwestern India. And such a river doesn't exist there today. So, what happened is that people thought therefore the Rg Veda cannot be talking about India. It has to be talking about some other place outside of India where there was some kind of river.

But what happened that is quite interesting a few years ago is that archaeologists in India started studying the satellite photographs from American satellites like LANDSAT had been providing and they noticed there was a dry river channel that began up in the Himalayas, a huge river that went down almost to that Bay of Khambaht (Cambay) we are talking about (the location of the underwater city site). And then later, they found that on the banks of that river there were 800 to 1000 urban sites, archaeological sites.So, it does appear that what the Rg Veda was talking about, a mighty river lined with cities in India over 5,000 years ago - that has to be true. The last time that river had water in it was over 5,000 years ago?Is there a possibility that there could have been some sort of non-human co-habitation on the continent of India let's say 50,000 years ago that could explain all of the Vedas?

Yes. In Kashmir, the valley of Kashmir, it appears it was many years ago a lake. Now, there is an ancient Sanskrit manuscript that tells of a lake that existed in that area, so that account is there in some ancient writings. Now, according to modern geological reporting, about 40,000 years ago Kashmir was indeed a lake in the valley of Kashmir in northern India. It was covered by a huge lake and it was blocked on the southern end by a little range of mountains. And at a certain point, something happened and it broke open and the lake drained out. That happened about 40,000 to 50,000 years ago. So, it is interesting that you've got this ancient historical record that talks about this lake. And if it is to be taken literally, then it means that somebody must have seen this lake as it existed 50,000 years ago and wrote about it."

Harappan Civilization (ca. 3000 - 1500 B.C.)

Until the recent Bay of Khambaht discovery, one of the oldest, advanced urban centers in India investigated by archaeologists is Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro in present day Pakistan along the Indus River. Will anything in the Bay of Khambaht discovery resemble the structures of the very ancient and mysterious Harappan Civilization? Excavated walls of a Harappan urban city, one of the most mysterious cultures of the ancient Indian world more than 3,000 years ago. The people were literate and used the Dravidian Sanskrit language, only part of which has been deciphered today. The artifacts from Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro in the Indus Valley of Pakistan are extraordinary in beauty and detail.

NASA Images Discover Ancient Bridge
Between India & Sri Lanka

Space images taken by NASA reveal a mysterious ancient bridge in the Palk Strait
between India and Sri Lanka. The recently discovered bridge currently named as
Ram Setu (Adam's Bridge) is made of chain of shoals, c.18 mi (30 km) long.

The bridge's unique curvature and composition by age reveals that it is man made. The legends as well as Archeological studies reveal that the first signs of human inhabitants in Sri Lanka date back to the a primitive age, about 1,750,000 years ago and the bridge's age is also almost equivalent.

This information is a crucial aspect for an insight into the ancient epic RAMAYANA, which was supposed to have taken place in treta yuga (more than 1,700,000 years ago)......

Ancient India's Contribution to Mathematics

Mathematics represents a high level of abstraction attained by the human mind. In India, mathematics has its roots in Vedic literature which is nearly 4000 years old. Between 1000 B.C. and 1000 A.D. various treatises on mathematics were authored by Indian mathematicians in which were set forth for the first time, the concept of zero, the techniques of algebra and algorithm, square root and cube root.

This method of graduated calculation
was documented in the Pancha-Siddhantika
(Five Principles) in the 5th Century
But the technique is said to be dating
from Vedic times circa 2000 B.C.

As in the applied sciences like production technology, architecture and shipbilding, Indians in ancient times also made advances in abstract sciences like Mathematics and Astronomy. It has now been generally accepted that the technique of algebra and the concept of zero originated in India.

But it would be surprising for us to know that even the rudiments of Geometry, called Rekha-Ganita in ancient India, were formulated and applied in the drafting of Mandalas for architectural purposes. They were also displayed in the geometric patterns used in many temple motifs.

Even the technique of calculation, called algorithm, which is today widely used in designing soft ware programs (instructions) for computers was also derived from Indian mathematics. In this chapter we shall examine the advances made by Indian mathematicians in ancient times.

ALGEBRA- THE OTHER MATHEMATICS ?

In India around the 5th century A.D. a sys tem of mathematics that made astronomical calculations easy was developed. In those times its application was limited to astronomy as its pioneers were Astronomers. As tronomical calculations are complex and involve many variables that go into the derivation of unknown quantities. Algebra is a short-hand method of calculation and by this feature it scores over conventional arithmetic.

In ancient India conventional mathematics termed Ganitam was known before the development of algebra. This is borne out by the name - Bijaganitam, which was given to the algebraic form of computation. Bijaganitam means 'the other mathematics' (Bija means 'another' or 'second' and Ganitam means mathematics). The fact that this name was chosen for this system of computation implies that it was recognised as a parallel system of computation, different from the conventional one which was used since the past and was till then the only one. Some have interpreted the term Bija to mean seed, symbolizing origin or beginning. And the inference that Bijaganitam was the original form of computation is derived. Credence is lent to this view by the existence of mathematics in the Vedic literature which was also shorthand method of computation. But whatever the origin of algebra, it is certain that this technique of computation Originated in India and was current around 1500 years back. Aryabhatta an Indian mathematican who lived in the 5th century A.D. has referred to Bijaganitam in his treatise on Mathematics, Aryabhattiya. An Indian mathematician - astronomer, Bhaskaracharya has also authored a treatise on this subject. the treatise which is dated around the 12th century A.D. is entitled 'Siddhanta-Shiromani' of which one section is entitled Bijaganitam.

Thus the technique of algebraic computation was known and was developed in India in earlier times. From the 13th century onwards, India was subject to invasions from the Arabs and other Islamised communities like the Turks and Afghans. Alongwith these invader: came chroniclers and critics like Al-beruni who studied Indian society and polity.

The Indian system of mathematics could no have escaped their attention. It was also the age of the Islamic Renaissance and the Arabs generally improved upon the arts and sciences that they imbibed from the land they overran during their great Jehad. Th system of mathematics they observed in India was adapted by them and given the name 'Al-Jabr' meaning 'the reunion of broken parts'. 'Al' means 'The' & 'Jabr' mean 'reunion'. This name given by the Arabs indicates that they took it from an external source and amalgamated it with their concepts about mathematics.

Between the 10th to 13th centuries, the Christian kingdoms of Europe made numerous attempts to reconquer the birthplace of Jesus Christ from its Mohammedan-Arab rulers. These attempts called the Crusades failed in their military objective, but the contacts they created between oriental and occidental nations resulted in a massive exchange of ideas. The technique of algebr could have passed on to the west at thi time.

During the Renaissance in Europe, followed by the industrial revolution, the knowledge received from the east was further developed. Algebra as we know it today has lost any characteristics that betray it eastern origin save the fact that the tern 'algebra' is a corruption of the term 'Al jabr' which the Arabs gave to Bijaganitam Incidentally the term Bijaganit is still use in India to refer to this subject.

In the year 1816, an Englishman by the name James Taylor translated Bhaskara's Leelavati into English. A second English translation appeared in the following year (1817) by the English astronomer Henry Thomas Colebruke. Thus the works of this Indian mathematician astronomer were made known to the western world nearly 700 years after he had penned them, although his ideas had already reached the west through the Arabs many centuries earlier.

In the words of the Australian Indologist A.L. Basham (A.L. Basham; The Wonder That was India.) "... the world owes most to India in the realm of mathematics, which was developed in the Gupta period to a stage more advanced than that reached by any other nation of antiquity. The success of Indian mathematics was mainly due to the fact that Indians had a clear conception of the abstract number as distinct from the numerical quantity of objects or spatial extension."

Thus Indians could take their mathematical concepts to an abstract plane and with the aid of a simple numerical notation devise a rudimentary algebra as against the Greeks or the ancient Egyptians who due to their concern with the immediate measurement of physical objects remained confined to Mensuration and Geometry.

GEOMETRY AND ALGORITHM

But even in the area of Geometry, Indian mathematicians had their contribution. There was an area of mathematical applications called Rekha Ganita (Line Computation). The Sulva Sutras, which literally mean 'Rule of the Chord' give geometrical methods of constructing altars and temples. The temples layouts were called Mandalas. Some of important works in this field are by Apastamba, Baudhayana, Hiranyakesin, Manava, Varaha and Vadhula.

The Arab scholar Mohammed Ibn Jubair al Battani studied Indian use of ratios from Retha Ganita and introduced them among the Arab scholars like Al Khwarazmi, Washiya and Abe Mashar who incorporated the newly acquired knowledge of algebra and other branches of Indian mathema into the Arab ideas about the subject.

The chief exponent of this Indo-Arab amalgam in mathematics was Al Khwarazmi who evolved a technique of calculation from Indian sources. This technique which was named by westerners after Al Khwarazmi as "Algorismi" gave us the modern term Algorithm, which is used in computer software.

Algorithm which is a process of calculation based on decimal notation numbers. This method was deduced by Khwarazmi from the Indian techniques geometric computation which he had st ied. Al Khwarazmi's work was translated into Latin under the title "De Numero Indico" which means 'of Indian Numerals' thus betraying its Indian origin. This translation which belong to the 12th century A.D credited to one Adelard who lived in a town called Bath in Britian.

Thus Al Khwarazmi and Adelard could looked upon as pioneers who transmit Indian numerals to the west. Incidents according to the Oxford Dictionary, word algorithm which we use in the English language is a corruption of the name Khwarazmi which literally means '(a person) from Khawarizm', which was the name of the town where Al Khwarazmi lived. To day unfortunately', the original Indian texts that Al Khwarazmi studied arelost to us, only the translations are avail able .

The Arabs borrowed so much from India the field of mathematics that even the subject of mathematics in Arabic came to known as Hindsa which means 'from India and a mathematician or engineer in Arabic is called Muhandis which means 'an expert in Mathematics'. The word Muhandis possibly derived from the Arabic term mathematics viz. Hindsa.

The Concept of Zero

The concept of zero also originated inancient India. This concept may seem to be a very ordinary one and a claim to its discovery may be viewed as queer. But if one gives a hard thought to this concept it would be seen that zero is not just a numeral. Apart from being a numeral, it is also a concept, and a fundamental one at that. It is fundamental because, terms to identify visible or perceptible objects do not require much ingenuity.

But a concept and symbol that connotes nullity represents a qualitative advancement of the human capacity of abstraction. In absence of a concept of zero there could have been only positive numerals in computation, the inclusion of zero in mathematics opened up a new dimension of negative numerals and gave a cut off point and a standard in the measurability of qualities whose extremes are as yet unknown to human beings, such as temperature.

In ancient India this numeral was used in computation, it was indicated by a dot and was termed Pujyam. Even today we use this term for zero along with the more current term Shunyam meaning a blank. But queerly the term Pujyam also means holy. Param-Pujya is a prefix used in written communication with elders. In this case it means respected or esteemed. The reason why the term Pujya - meaning blank - came to be sanctified can only be guessed.

Indian philosophy has glorified concepts like the material world being an illusion Maya), the act of renouncing the material world (Tyaga) and the goal of merging into the void of eternity (Nirvana). Herein could lie the reason how the mathematical concept of zero got a philosophical connotation of reverence.

It is possible that like the technique of algebra; the concept of zero also reached the west through the Arabs. In ancient India the terms used to describe zero included Pujyam, Shunyam, Bindu the concept of a void or blank was termed as Shukla and Shubra. The Arabs refer to the zero as Siphra or Sifr from which we have the English terms Cipher or Cypher. In English the term Cipher connotes zero or any Arabic numeral. Thus it is evident that the term Cipher is derived from the Arabic Sifr which in turn is quite close to the Sanskrit term Shubra.

The ancient India astronomer Brahmagupta is credited with having put forth the concept of zero for the first time: Brahmagupta is said to have been born the year 598 A.D. at Bhillamala (today's Bhinmal ) in Gujarat, Western India. ] much is known about Brahmagupta's early life. We are told that his name as a mathematician was well established when K Vyaghramukha of the Chapa dyansty m him the court astronomer. Of his two treatises, Brahma-sputa siddhanta and Karanakhandakhadyaka, first is more famous. It was a corrected version of the old Astronomical text, Brahma siddhanta. It was in his Brahma-sphu siddhanta, for the first time ever had be formulated the rules of the operation zero, foreshadowing the decimal system numeration. With the integration of zero into the numerals it became possible to note higher numerals with limited charecters.

In the earlier Roman and Babylonian systems of numeration, a large number of chara acters were required to denote higher numerals. Thus enumeration and computation became unwieldy. For instance, as E the Roman system of numeration, the number thirty would have to be written as X: while as per the decimal system it would 30, further the number thirty three would be XXXIII as per the Roman system, would be 33 as per the decimal system. Thus it is clear how the introduction of the decimal system made possible the writing of numerals having a high value with limited characters. This also made computation easier.

Apart from developing the decimal system based on the incorporation of zero in enumeration, Brahmagupta also arrived at solutions for indeterminate equations of 1 type ax2+1=y2 and thus can be called the founder of higher branch of mathematics called numerical analysis. Brahmagupta's treatise Brahma-sputa-siddhanta was translated into Arabic under the title Sind Hind).

For several centuries this translation mained a standard text of reference in the Arab world. It was from this translation of an Indian text on Mathematics that the Arab mathematicians perfected the decimal system and gave the world its current system of enumeration which we call the Arab numerals, which are originally Indian numerals.

India is a land of innumerable beliefs, rituals and religious symbols. These beliefs and symbols are highly respected and revered.

The origin of the syllable OM is lost in the misty past. Its not being specific to any one country or civilization is indicative of its being an universally perceptible sound for the human race. This reason for this universal perceptibility possibly lies in the fact that AAAH is the most natural sound that issues from the human larynx. This is evident when a man cries out naturally in extreme pain, anger or fear. When emotions reach an extreme pitch the articulate sounds evolved by man are not the ones that are heard, but the syllable natural to man which is AAAH.

As a devout people we normally do not go into the meaning and interpretation of our many beliefs. It is sufficient for most of us to know that they are part of the heritage handed down to us by our ancestors and in deference to tradition it becomes our duty to scrupulously and meticulously adhere to them. But by doing things without knowing the meaning behind them do we not deprive ourselves of an insight into our heritage?

Culture can be well appreciated and adapted to changing times if the meaning behind its different constituents is well understood. To develop this understanding one has to look upon all human actions as having originated in human society. While answers to all questions cannot be obtained, the acceptance of this approach at least opens the door to inquiry into the circumstances which gave rise to our revered traditions.

An attempt to interpret our religious beliefs and symbols is a challenging task. Many of these issues defy analysis and call for a judicious combination of the study of the social environment, etymology, aesthetics and philosophy. As far as aesthetics and philosophy go there exists a good deal of subjectivism and value judgement. While talking about etymology and the social environment we are on relatively firmer ground. In this chapter we have taken a set of symbols, beliefs and rituals and have attempted to examine the possible meaning behind them and the reasons which could lie behind their origin. The first religious symbol we take up is that of Om or Omkar.

OM or Omkar

The syllable OM is quite familiar to a Hindu. It occurs in every prayer. Invocation to most gods begin with this syllable. For instance we have Om Namaha Shivaya, Hari Om, Om Shanti etc. OM is also pronounced as AUM.

Is OM present in Christianity as 'Amen' and in Islam as 'Amin'?

This term occurs in various ancient and modern civilizations. It exists Hinduism, Christianity and Islam.

In Arabic the first alphabet is pronounced as aliph. In Greek it is alpha, in the Roman script it is A. Thus in many languages the first letter in the alphabet has the syllable A, with which the word AUM or OM begins. In the Greek alphabet the last letter is Omega which comes very close to OM. Thus the significance of the syllable OM as the beginning and end finds a parallel in many of the scripts associated with ancient languages.

This syllable also occurs in words such as Omen which means a sign of something that is to occur in future, Ombudsman means a person having authority to pronounce a verdict. Thus Om is also used to signify divinity and authority.

HINDUISM

A student of Hinduism can be compared with one of those blind-folded wise men who set about to examine an elephant by touching it and came up with totally different ideas about what the elephant looked like, none of which were factual. Hinduism is like a multifarious ocean of beliefs and modes of worship with an indeterminate origin. It comprises within itself the most sublime philosophies and gross fetishism of all kinds of objects which are worshipped.

This is one religion with a history stretching from around the second millennium B.C.E. upto the present.

The Pantheism of Hinduism

A contemporary author has observed, "As a matter of fact orthodox Hindus have believed in every kind of theism, polytheism, and pantheism. They have worshipped any object which they prefer, or practically none. They followed any standard of morality or almost none. Yet they have been recognised as Hindus in good and regular standing as long as they have not flagrantly violated the rules of caste or for that offence been out-casted".

Educated Hindus though have rejected the primitive features and have developed a refined religion which they follow alongwith the cruder versions that resemble primitive animism followed by their rural and tribal brethren. Throughout its long history there have been many reform movements in Hinduism, the best known of which were Buddhism and Jainism in around the 6th century B.C.E. and Sikhism in the 16th century C.E. The recent reform movements such as the Brahmo Samaj, the Arya Samaj Prarthana Samaj, have been protests against ritualism and idolatory, but their membership is very small.

In other primitive religions, when a great reformer has come, the entire primitive religion has become uniform, and unified and has consequently become cohesive and monotheistic as in the case of Zoroastrianism and Islam. But in India the followers of a reformer have always been a separate sect and the old Hindu religion has continued to be the religion of a vast majority.

As Hinduism has always been an eclectic religion it becomes difficult to identify all features which are universally recognised in this religion. The objects of veneration and worship in Hindu temples are very startling to those not familiar with the history of this hoary religion (One has to remember that the term religion is very loosely applied to Hinduism. It is more a collection of attitudes and forms of worship).

It is widely recognised that most elements of present day Hinduism descended from the amalgam of the religious beliefs of the Aryans who are said to have come into India (West Punjab) around 1750 B.C.E. and those of the earlier peoples who reportedly were the founders of the Indus valley civilization.

(Many scholars refute the Aryan invasion theory and also the date stated here for the entry of the Aryans into India. These scholars propound that India was the original home of the Aryans and it was from India that they spread to other parts of the globe. These scholars say that it was the Aryans themselves who founded the Indus (or Saraswati) valley civilization.

This is one point of view and the dating these scholars propound is supported by the star patterns mentioned in the Vedas, and the epics. Deciphering of the Indus Valley script as to be, in fact, Sanskrit also supports the point of view that the founders of the Indus - Saraswati - valley civilization were also Sanskrit speakers and hence Aryans (and not pre-Aryans). However, the author of this web page cannot claim any authority to either support or refute either theory. But then this debate is not relevant to our discussion as here we are not concerned with the fact whether the Aryans came into India from other parts of our globe or left India to go to other parts of our globe. That the Aryans existed in history is enough for our discussion. We are concerned with their modes of worship.)

The earliest objects of worship were the forces of nature and the religion was in essence polytheistic. Later on came the personified Gods like Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva while the polytheistic nature remained unchanged.

Partial Amalgamation through the Concept of Incarnation (Avatara)

With a view to having a unifying medium, in this mushrooming pantheon, was propagated the monotheistic philosophy that there is one God, one supreme reality (Brahman) and the various personified Gods, Goddesses and animistic objects of worship are incarnations (Avataras) of God. While God himself was indestructible, the various incarnations in which he descended to Earth in the form (Rupa) of an ordinary mortal had to go through the cycle of birth and death. The incarnation idea helped to partially unify the plethora of deities as different manifestations of a single divine entity. It also facilitated the absorption of deites from other religions and tribal cults which had been outside the pale of Hinduism.

Assimilation, acculturation, amalgamation have been the hallmarks of the development and growth of the Hindu religion.

Many deities are themselves a result of amalgamation of two or more deities. For instance we have Hari-hara who is an amalgam of Hari (Krishan who is an incarnation of Vishnu) and Hara (Shiva). This amalgamation of the two recognised principal deities Vishnu and Shiva was undertaken to ease out the dualism in the Hindu religion due to the existence of the two principal sects Vaishnavism (worshippers of Vishnu) and Shaivism (worshippers of Shiva) who were frequently at loggerheads with each other. There are innumerable other sects though. Another deity who is also amalgam of Vishnu and Shiva is variously known as Sashta and Ayyappa. He has a famous shrine devoted to him at Sabarimala in Kerala

Hinduism - The Essence of India Part 1

India is the birthplace of many religions, Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism are all progeny of this part of our globe. But they are not the only religions that exist here. Adherents of Christianity, Islam, Zoroastrainism and Judaism also to be found in India.

Over countless generations there has been significant exchange of customs, traditions, beliefs, rituals, etc., between these different religions Such an exchange is not peculiar to India and has been occuring the world over throughout the past. In India though, the existence of many religions in the same social environment created a situation favourable for such an interchange of customs and rituals.

The other fact that some religions existing in India are offspring of the amalgam of beliefs that co-existed under the heading Hinduism. This has also led to the presence of many features of the parent religion in the offspring religions. At times this has blurred the line dividing Hinduism from the offspring religions leading occasionally to tension of the offspring religions with their parent.

One instance of this is the ire against the constitution of India wherein the term 'Hindu' includes Buddhists, Jains and Sikhs.

who have renounced material pleasures
of life. They along with
the semi-formal Brahmin clergymen
are looked upon as what can come
closest to a priesthood.

But interchange of customs and rituals has taken place even between religions originating in India and those brought into India from other parts of our globe. This interchange has also been a massive one for the reason that that apart from the fusion of customs as a result of co-existence of different forms of worship, the adherents of religions originating in other parts of the globe like Christianity and Islam are largely converts from Hinduism. This does not apply in the case of Zoroastrianism and Judaism as these two religions have tended to be insular and have jealously guarded against the entry of members of other faiths by way of conversion. But even then they display many traits which they have absorbed from other religions especially Hinduism.

Although this interchange has been quite substantial, it has not succeeded in bringing about identity in many important respects. Communal riots are still not a thinq of the past, sectarian feelings are still very much with as and there normally run counter to the spirit of nationalism and secularism. The result of this is perhaps India's having the dubious distinction of being a Secular society without a common civil code. For an appraisal of contemporary Indian society to be complete we ought to examine the nature and genesis of the different religions that exist around us, and also the extent to which they have influenced each other. To obtain an insisght into every religion, we shall briefly state the history of every religion since its inception, what it has borrowed from other faiths and what it has lent to it.

We start with the religion which is not only professed by a vast majority in India, but has also been the birthplace for many customs found in other religious communities in India.

This is the dhun which I used to listen two years ago when I first came near to Sai Baba. It produced such electric effect in my heart that I swayed with it. I used to listen it continously from morning till evening in my office and it gave me great sense of Baba's presence. I wished to post it since long but could not do so and at last left it to Baba to decide when to post.

Many devotees asked me for this dhun but I was not able to copy it in my system from cd. I tried to find another hard copy from few devotee friends of mine, but since it was released long time back there were problems in copying. This morning to my surprise I saw Sai Devotee Darpan's mail and when I opened it, there was a link of this dhun as his contribution. Really Baba's way of showering blessings are unique and beyond our understanding.

Sai Devotee Darpan has sent many other bhajans and dhuns which will be posted in subsequent posts. Few other devotees have also contributed bhajans for this blog, but as Hindi Sai Satchatritra Audio and Sai Asra album was being posted I chose to post them after that.

Again this weekend, I scribbled something on my web Inspite of my willingness and eagerness to regularly update the blog, I am not able to do so due to my busy week days. So this weekend, I tried to spare some time from my family and friends for my Sai Family to share few lines with them.
I will be providing download link for first bhajan from my album SAI TERE HAZAARON NAAM. But first let me write something regarding this bhajan.

This particular bhajan is not the first bhajan which I wrote. It was written after two or three bhajans were ready. Still it got the first position in sequence after recording all of them. It has a very deep meaning and I think it was proper to place it in the first position.

My mother is a very religious and devout person. In my chilhood days, she used to ask me to go to various religious places narrating me some problems and assured me to get solution there. Thus the seed of spirituality was sown in me since chilhood days only. This seed has now grown to great tree whose flowers have blossomed beautifully and its fruits are very sweet. One can find the line Dar Dar Main To Bhatak Raha Tha… very meaningful here. Really I feel that I was suffering from many past births and Shirdi Sai Baba picked me up and hugged me. It will not be wrong to say that He has chosen me and not I have chosen Him.
When all the bhajans of the album were released on maintained by Hetal, she had narrated an unforgetable experience of mine after the cd was recorded and was taken to Shirdi. I wanted to do something different for my Sai Baba and in what way He accepted my gift has been described there. So rather giving link to the post, I will keep it here directly for the ease of my lovable readers. The album was released on Gurupoornima Day (i.e. July 18th, 2008) on

Finally the day has come, for which I was eagerly waiting. Gurupoornima day is auspicious and dear to Sai Baba Devotees and this day has been chosen by Sai Baba to release an album of Sai Bhajans named SAI TERE HAZAARON NAAM . I think it is the first time ever that a bhajan album is being released on a blog. Great are His leelas and even greater He is. He pulls the wires so smartly that we become only the puppets who act as per His wish. This same thing has happened with me and Mr. Rana Gill . We had a talk on phone regarding the work of his album for the first time and now we are so much attached to each other that we strongly feel that bhajans were only a medium for us to meet, rather it was pre planned by the main doer of all this i.e. Sai Baba.

Before giving the link for the first bhajan of the album I would like to share something about Mr. Gill. An introduction of Mr. Rana Gill has already been given on my blog related to Experiences of Shirdi Sai Baba, I am repeating it here for sake of first time visitors. Ranaji is an ardent devotee of Sai Baba and he has poured his love and devotion towards Sai Baba in the form of bhajans. He has good first hand experiences of Sai Baba which will be posted on my other blog, one is already posted and devotees can follow the net. The video of the title track was shooted at 29th sector in Sai Temple in Chandigarh (Punjab). I strongly feel that many devotees will listen to all the bhajans and it will not only be restricted to listening only, but it will be downloaded and also shared with those devotees who are not exposed much to the internet. Ranaji is basically from Punjab, India but from past 8 years he is in Canada . The music director of the album Vikram Nagi is a young and talented artist aged only 22 years when he made the music for the album. Great work has been done by him. The music is very simple yet soothing, the lyrics of the bhajans (written by Ranaji himself) and voice of Ranaji simply adds beauty to it. The music is arranged by Nasib and Dinesh and recording was done at Royualz Studio and Dream Studio, Chandigarh. I will be posting the bhajans of the album with lyrics of the same one by one so that readers and visitors can download them at their ease and comfort, listen to one bhajan, slip it in their hearts and minds before the next one is posted. Comments from devotees are welcomed on our mail id only.

Ranaji shared a touching incident regrding this album and how SaiBaba has accepted his love in the form of bhajans. He has asked me to share with our fellow Sai family members. It was in the year 2006 when the recording of the bhajans was completed and Ranaji and his friend Vikram (who is the music director) went to Shirdi for Baba’s darshan and for offering his first cd to Him. When they reached Samadhi Mandir, Lata Mangeshkar’s bhajans were being played. Ranaji prayed to Sai Baba that his cd must be played at least once in His Darbar (court) and see how Baba fulfilled his wish. After having pleasant darshan of Sai Baba, Ranaji doubted whether his bhajans will be played there while bhajans of such great artists are being played. Now they both decided to give some money to the shopkeepers nearby and ask them to play the cd. Ranaji gives the reason here why he decided so in his own words, "Because this is my wish that my cd should be first played in Shirdi and then only I will listen myself too, as I live in Canada and I dont know when I will come to India again...thats why". But was Baba to be satisfied by listening the bhajans made and sung for Him outside His own house? No. He had planned something else.

Ranaji then went inside Samadhi Mandir premises and showed his cd to the security guard and asked whether it was possible to play his cd in Baba's Darbar. The following are Ranaji's words, The security guard listened to my request nicely and did not say anything just hold my hand and took me to the main computer room of Sansthan where the bhajans are normally played and monitored. Ranaji showed his cd to the old gentleman who was an engineer sitting there and requested him to play the cds just once. That gentleman said that they will first listen and then will play for the devotees. He listened the first track of the album “Dar Dar Main To Bhatak Raha Tha” and at once approved it to be played after Madhyayan arti. After this, Ranaji describes his own experience in his own words, they played all 8 tracks and I sat in Dwarkamai and listen all of the bhajans. My eyes were full of tears because I thought to play the cd outside mandir at any music shop before but Baba did not want that.

After all tracks were played when Ranaji went to that gentleman who played all the tracks to thank him and said, I wanted to play the cd outside in some shop but you did great job for me. He said these words which Ranaji says he will never ever forget in his life, “Jiske Liye Banaya Hai Uske Ghar Mein Sabse Pehli Hi Chalega Na Bahar Kaise Chal Jata Pehle" meaning for whom the cd has been made should be played in His Home only for the first time, where else it must be played? Ranaji was touched to hear these words and was more than excited when he was praised for his work and voice.
Ranaji said thanks again and outside that room there was Baba's big snap and he prayed to Baba after release of this cd please play again in your Darbar Baba. Before he reached the last staircase of the room, a small boy came to Ranaji, held his hand and said that he has been called upstairs. Ranaji again went upstairs. The same gentleman asked for Ranaji’s permission to copy the bhajans in their system to be played in future. He said, I liked your all bhajans. Here Ranaji says, Just a few seconds before I wished and Baba fulfilled it ..........He is great. Obviously Ranaji had no objection and he was happy deep within. I too was feeling happy for Ranaji when I heard the whole incident. It clearly shows that everyone is same in the Darbar of Sai Baba, whether it is Ranaji or any other famous singer. He just wants ever flowing love from His devotees and in turn, He takes care of small small wishes of His devotees, then why Sai Baba would have denied this big wish of Ranaji. He gives us the best of our life for which we even have not dreamt of, then why Sai Baba will not give us what we dream?

Why Sai Baba always said Sabka Malik Ek

First of all, let me say sorry for not posting anything since one month. In post, I shared one of my dreams with you. Now in this post I will be sharing a strange real incident which happened in the beginning of the year 2008. Sometimes it is difficult to believe such incidences in this 21st century of advancement of science and technology, but all I can say that all is possible if Babaji's grace is with us and we have complete faith in Him.

It was midnight. I reached home after work and lit lamp before Babaji. Earlier it was otherwise with me. I used to light lamp only once in a week on Thursdays. On other days, I only used to light incense stick. On advise of some other devotee, I started lighting lamp before Babaji. But my work schedule was such that there was no fixed time to start the work and there was always an uncertainity about returning. Actually I did not wish to be bound by any strict and fixed rules to worship Babaji. My work is of such nature that I could feel Babaji's presence everytime. Even while working I compose bhajans and tunes and sing before Babaji. Then I was reminded of Babaji's teachings regarding no strict rules had to be followed to worship Him. Calling 'Sai' lovingly is enough. At last with many pros and cons I decided to light lamp before Babaji at the time of leaving for work and after returning home, be it any time of the day.

On one such day, it was midnight at about 3:00 AM. As per practice I lighted lamp before Babaji and sat in front of Him singing one of my favourite composition," Tere Darshan Ko Tarse Naina...Shirdi Wale Sai...Tadap Raha Hu Daras Dikhado...Shirdi Wale Baba...Shirdi Wale Baba...Shirdi Wale Sai..." This is not only a bhajan in praise of Babaji but my longing to see and meet Him. I had heard many incidents about how Babaji gave darshan to many Sai Devotees, "Then why not me Babaji", this was my prayer. I was tired much and sleepy too. But was determined to have darshan of Babaji that day. "Today Babaji has to come out of shrine. From many years I have been waiting, so whatever may happen today, I want to meet You Babaji"... were my thoughts.

In those days I was also listening Osho's philosophy about meditation, method through which we can get darshan of our worshipped God and Goddess and was inspired to do meditation. I was continously looking at the flame of lamp and closed eyes unknowingly, but was awake and fully conscious. Suddenly I felt as if Someone was patting my left shoulder. I did not pay attention. Then again I felt the same two three times. So I opened my eyes and saw Someone standing, dressed in white clothes. At first I was scared. Then He put His hand on my left hand and made me stand up as a small kid is made to stand with support. I stood up and Lo! What I saw, I was standing but could see myself seated too. I was surprised at this sight, but this frightened me more. A second thought came that "Earlier I only wished for some miracle, then why should I get frightened now? Will see what happens today."

That Someone hold my hand, but there was no trace of courage in me to look at Him. We both started flying up through the roof!! At the same time I could see myself sitting down!! The roof of my house was clearly visible to me as we were advancing upwards. We reached high up and the scene from above could be compared when seen from an aeroplane. Night view of the Vancouver city was enhancing and a rare sight. Simultaneously we were going high up without any pause. Only thing which was constant was the speed with we were going up and strange thoughts crossing my mind. I thought, "How will I go down now after going up so high". I felt as if I was dead and all the situations proved this. After few seconds I gathered some courage and questioned "Who are you? Where are we going?" But there was no answer. He was much taller than me, so I could not get chance to see His face.

Soon after, all the lighting was disappearing gradually and darkness was all over. We reached to a place, which was surrounded by hills covered with snow. The sight was very pleasing which was beyond words and never in my life I will forget it. There was bright light above the hills. It seemed as if water was flowing down from the hills, but it was not water, it was bright light. In all the three directions I could see the bright light as hundreds and hundreds of sun were shinning at their fullest at the same time. Every nerve of my body wished to see the scene continously without any interruption.

Due to such bright light I was unable to open my eyes. Someone said, "Rana, open your eyes". I said, "I am not able to open my eyes due bright light". "How can you say that? Your eyes are wide open" was the question by Someone. I was surprised at this opposite exclamation and gathered some courage to open my eyes (dont know exactly whether my eyes were closed or open) and I saw my Sai Babaji standing beside me on my left side with His head bowed down towards the bright light and hands folded as if prostrating. Now I realised that Someone was none other than Sai Babaji.

Then Babaji starts speaking in Punjabi (my mother tongue) with me but here english translation is given.

Apart from me and Someone, there were many Gods, Goddess and saints on my left and right side, which I did not notice at all. They all had their heads bowed down with folded hands and all were looking at the bright light. Babaji said, "Rana, Look on both the sides, other Gods and Goddess are standing in front of that Supreme (bright light) with folded hands with their heads bowed down. You also fold your hands and prostrate". I did so and looked at other Gods and Goddesses present there. I was not able to recognise everyone but could only had a glance of Shri Guru Nanak Devji. He said, "Rana, this is that Malik whom I refer always. He runs the whole world. He is the Supreme Power. Dont trouble Me from now onwards and also dont cry for Me henceforth. Dont remember Me day and night as you do now. See We both are standing at one place. Now there is no difference between you and Me".
I said, "Its Your Blessing Babaji that You showed me all this. Babaji by bringing me here, to this heavenly place, I got that thing which I did not deserve at all. I really respect all other Gods and Goddesses from my deep heart. But Babaji I love You only, I want You only, I want to talk with You only, You are my only refuge and I want to live with You only in my whole life. You are my Malik, then why should I not trouble You for my problems and why should I not long to see You and meet You. Thanks Babaji for showing me all this. I have only one request that just come to meet me whenever I call You as You are my strength and weakness. I want You to be with me everytime. I always felt Your presence Babaji, but my longing to meet You has been satisfied today. Do come to meet me and love me always". Babaji smiled and answered, "Rana, you are very innocent and be like this only. I know my son you will never change. If you love Me, I love you too." and patted my back like His child and said, "Let's go now".

I thought while returning I will talk with Babaji to my heart's content as it will take the same time go down. But before I could think further or say something, we reached home. While going upwards it took much time but while returning we reached within seconds. I found myself entering into my own body. There was a sudden jerk in my body and when I opened my eyes, I found myself sitting in front of shrine and felt as if Babaji of the shrine was looking at me from inside. I was surprised about the incident which happened few minutes ago and thought it to be a dream. I again tried to find out Babaji in my house but did not succeed. So I tried to do meditation again, go back to the same stage, but this too did not produce any result. My body was perspiring, tears were rolling down my eyes and I bow to Babaji and these lines were revolving in mind, "sai teri leela"By this time it was about 5:00 AM and so I went to sleep.

Dear Readers, I would like to convey a message to all that anyone can get darshan of Babaji today also, provided we have Shraddha and Saburi. Every devotee is equal in the eyes of Sai Babaji and He gives special treatment to everyone, but sometimes we only fail to understand such blessings.
On thorough analysis of this incident, I realised that Babaji gave me Shakshat darshan along with a deep message and also made me meet that 'Malik'. So in the end, I understood "Why Sai Babaji always said Sabka Malik Ek" and my heart sang "Sabka Malik Ek Hai Jagme Mujhe Samjhaya Sai Ne"... Jai Sai Ram -- Rana Gill

Sai Baba used Bade Baba as a Medium of Instruction

In one of earlier posts on this blog, we had read about Bade Baba's strange behaviour towards Sai Baba. Pride arouse in Bade Baba's mind as he was respected by Baba in the form of highest Dakshina of more than Rs. 100 everyday. At times Bade Baba even acted against Baba's wishes. The devotees felt that Bade Baba must use his language carefully and politely while at least speaking to or about Baba. But, his choice of words bordered on sheer arrogance.

Once Baba's devotee Shri Raghuvir Bhaskar Purandare was suffering was suffering from severe headache. Whole night, he was restless. In the same condition, he went to Baba. Bade Baba, who was sitting nearby, told harshly to Baba, "Purandare has suffered during the entire night. He has got a sever headache. Look after him. Don't make him so much ill."

Another similar event. Once, Baba was very much upset with Purandare. Therefore, Baba did not allow Purandare to fix the plants of beautiful scented flowers that he had specially bought. Obseving this, Bade Baba told Baba rahter self-righteously, "Why are You getting so angry with Purandare? He is dying for You day and night. he forgets to even drink or eat while serving You. You also remember im at all times. But, when he comes to You, You act as if You are upset. What is this strange behaviour?"

After having his lunch it was Bade Baba's practice to get ready to go. Everyday, Baba would bid him good bye by walking a few steps with him. After the previous said arrogant utterance, Bade Baba further added as usual, "Achchaa, I am going now. Are You coming or not?" Baba did not take offence at these words; but quietly got up and saw him off.

In the initial period, whenever the devotees made preparations for Arti, Bade Baba would get up and go down to the Sabha Mandap. He did not participate in the Arti. Later on, as persuaded by Kakasaheb Dixit, he did not move to the Sabha Mandap; but continued his abstainace from participating in Arti. Many Hindu devotee disliked this. However, Kakasaheb as per his kind and loving nature managed to persuade the Hindu devotes to overlook Bade Baba's behaviour. He said, "Sai Baba has accepted Bade Baba as His. Therefore, he is one of us. Then, where does the question of discrimination arise?"

Bade Baba's bloated ego had become a nuisance to other devotees. They covertly hated him. Therefore, they even did not let out their rooms for Bade Baba's stay. Ultimately, Kakasaheb came to his rescue and allowed him to stay in one of his rooms in his Wada. Kakasaheb said, "We must see ourselves in anyone who has been accepted by Baba".

It is only the fortunate few who are able to spend time with saints. But, even they must strive to overcome ego.

Baba treated Bade Baba as one of His near and dear ones. He was accorded the honor reserved for guests and friends. Baba always kept a seat next to Him for Bade Baba. A lot of amount was everyday donted to Him. Bade Baba was even given several opportunities for Parmeshwar-prapti.

But, Bade Baba wasted all the opportunities because of his bloated ego.

While giving money, Baba always cautioned, "This belongs to Allah. Eat, but don't defecate". The money given by Sai Baba was not to be used for seving self-interests. Those who used it for the betterment of others, prospered. However, Bade Baba spent money received from Baba for his family. However, within two months after Baba laid down His mortal physical form - Bade Baba became pennyless. He had to go begging from village to village. He passed away at Nagpur in January 1926.

It appears that Baba used Bade Baba as a medium of instruction. Through this, Baba wanted to set an example, from which other devotees could draw a lesson.

The then Editor of Shri Sai Leela Magazine Shri Kakasaheb Mahajani writes in his article, "Maharaj had some unique ways of imparting His teachings. One such method as Fakir Baba's (Bade Baba's) stay in Shirdi and Baba's behaviour with Him. One can draw a lot of lesson from this example.

Sai Satcharitra : Audio - Chapter 1 to 24

Sai Satcharitra was originally written in Marathi language by Shri Govindrao R. Dabholkar with Sai Baba's consent. He took a note of happenings and stories and turned his words into verses of poem. The stories of Sai Satcharitra contain spiritual gems above intellect. It can be looked upon as Ramayan, Mahabharat, Gita, Kuran and Bible. Teachings of all these holy and sacred books have been accumulated in this one book and it is my strong belief. Every word of Sai Satcharitra is the word of Sai Baba. Devotees consider it as Brahma Vakya. It consists of 53 chapters and 9308 verses. Every chapter is full of spiritual knowledge, interesting stories and above all Baba's teachings and philosophy. The permission to write this work was obtained from Baba Himself, so devotees feel Baba's presence in it. It was first published in the year 1929. Since then it has reached to thousands and thousands of Sai Devotees and the figures are continously increasing.

Even having this book at our home is beneficial, then what to say if it is read continously. In one way it is similar to doing Seva to our Sadguru. Making someone else hear it pleases Baba a lot and in a way it is considered as method of devotion. Each reading leaves an unmarked impression on our minds and relevant answers for our present situations. I have found answers to many unanswered question from this holy book. While writing or working on blog it is always near me and it encourages and helps me to bring out my best ability. I sometimes feel that Baba is only directing me what to do and what not to.

Such lengthy write ups find place in my other blog and you will be surprised that how this is written here. Not increasing your curiosity, I quickly write few words regarding this post and post for next few days (it may also extend to months).

This post is the most awaited post on this blog. I was waiting for permission from Sai Devotee Neeraj Kumar residing in Delhi to give me permission to upload Audio Version of Sai Satcharitra. Shailendra Bharati ji (Mumbai) who has sung many melodious bhajans has contributed his soothing voice in narrating Sai Satcharitra making it more appealing. The whole work is a set of two cds and since I have heard it the first time, I became a fan of it. It is really a blessing for those whose health is not good or those who dont get time to sit and read or those who want it to listen while travelling to their work places in abroad too. It is also helpful for parayan, if anyone is unable to read to due any problem. Thus keeping the concept of making it available to devotees across the world in my mind, I seeked permission to upload it on the very first day the blog was started, but it was not approved. Then before few days I was again inspired to try to get the permission on encouragement of my Sai Brother and I tried again. This time I readily got the permission to place download links. But I request other bloggers and website owners not to reuse download links directly on their webpage as I have got permission for this blog only, instead links to this blog and related posts can be given. Rathna sanu sarasanam, rajathadri srunga nikethanam,
Sinchini krutha pannageswarachyuthahana sayakam,
Kshipra dhagdha pura thrayam thri divalayairabhi vanditham,

I seek refuge in Him, who has the moon,
Who made the mountain of jewels in to his bow,
Who resides on the mountain of silver,
Who made the serpent Vasuki as rope,
Who made Lord Vishnu as arrows,
And quickly destroyed the three cities,
And who is saluted by the three worlds,
And so what can the God of death do to me?

Pancha paada pa pushpa gandhambhuja dwaya shobitham,
Phala lochana jatha pavaka dagdha manmatha vigraham,
Basma digdha kalebharam, bhava nasanam, bhava mavyayam,
Chandra shekaramasraye mama kim karishyathi vai yama.2

I seek refuge in Him, who has the moon,
Who shines with the pair of his lotus like feet,
Which are worshipped by the scented flowers of five kalpaka trees,
Who burnt the body of God of love,
Using the fire from the eyes on his forehead,
Who applies ash all over his body,
Who destroys the sorrow of life,
And who does not have destruction,
And so what can the God of death do to me?

Matha varana mukhya charma kruthothareeya mahoharam,
Pankajasana padma lochana poojithangri saroruham,
Deva sindhu tharanga seekara siktha jatadharam,
Chandra shekaramasraye mama kim karishyathi vai yama.3

I seek refuge in Him, who has the moon,
Who is the stealer of minds because of his upper cloth,
Made of the skin of the ferocious elephant,
Who has lotus like feet which are worshipped,
By Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu,
And who has matted hair drenched by drops,
Of the waves of the holy river Ganga,
And so what can God of death do to me?

Yaksha raja sakham bhagaksha haram bhujanga bhooshanam,
Shila raje suthaa parish krutha charu vama kalebharam,
Kshweda neela galam praswadha dharinam mruga dharinam,
Chandra shekaramasraye mama kim karishyathi vai yama.4

I seek refuge in Him, who has the moon,
Who is friend of Lord Khubhera,
Who destroyed the eyes of Bhaga,
Who wears serpent as ornament,
Whose left part of the body is decorated,
By the daughter of the king of mountain,
Whose neck is blue because of the poison,
Who is armed with an axe,
And who carries a deer with Him,
And so what can God of death do to me?

Kundali krutha kundaleeswara kundalam vrusha vahanam,
Naradadhi muneeswara sthutha vaibhavam bhuvaneswaram,
Andhakandhaka masrithamara padapam samananthakam,
Chandra shekaramasraye mama kim karishyathi vai yama.5

I seek refuge in Him, who has the moon,
Who wears the ear studs made of a curling serpent,
Who is the great one being praised by Narada and other sages,
Who is the Lord of the entire earth,
Who is the killer of Anthakasura.
Who is the wish giving tree to his devotees,
And who is the killer of God of death,
And so what can God of death do to me?

Bheshajam bhava roginamkhilapadamapa harinam,
Daksha yagna vinasanam trigunathmakam trivilochanam,
Bhukthi mukthi phala pradham sakalagha sanga nibharhanam,
Chandra shekaramasraye mama kim karishyathi vai yama.6

I seek refuge in Him, who has the moon,
Who is the doctor who cures sorrowful life,
Who destroys all sorts of dangers,
Who destroyed the fire sacrifice of Daksha,
Who is personification of three qualities,
Who has three different eyes,
Who bestows devotion and salvation,
And who destroys all types of sins,
And so what can God of death do to me?

Bhaktha vathsala marchitham, nidhim,akshayam, Haridambaram,
Sarva bhoothapathim, Parathparam apreya manuthamam,
Soma varinabhoohuthasana somapanilakha krutheem,
Chandra shekaramasraye mama kim karishyathi vai yama.7

I seek refuge in Him, who has the moon,
Who is worshipped as darling of devotees,
Who is the treasure which is perennial,
Who clothes Himself with the directions,
Who is the chief of all beings,
Who is beyond the unreachable God,
Who is not understood by any one,
Who is the holiest of every one,
And who is served by moon, water, sun, earth,
Fire, ether, boss and the Wind
And so what can god of death do to me?

Viswa srushti vidhayinam, punareva palana thathparam,
Samharathamapi prapanchamasesha loka nivasinam,
Kredayanthamaharnisam, gana nadha yudha samnvitham,
Chandra shekaramasraye mama kim karishyathi vai yama.8

I seek refuge in Him, who has the moon,
Who does the creation of the universe,
Who then is interested in its upkeep,
Who at proper time destroys the universe,
Who lives in every being of the universe,
Who is plays day and night with all beings,
Who is the leader of all beings,
And who is like any one of them,
And so what can god of death do to me?

Mruthyu bheetha mrukandu soonu krutha sthavam shiva sannidhou,
Yathra Thathra cha ya padennahi thasya mruthyu bhayam bhaveth,
Poorna mayor aroghitha makhilarthasambadamdhyam,
Chandra Shekara Eva thasya dadadhathi mukthi mayathnatha. 9

He who reads this prayer,
Composed by the son of Mrukandu,
Who was fear struck with death,,
In the temple of Lord Shiva,
Will not have fear of death,
He would have full healthy life,
With all grains and all wealth,
And Lord Chandra Shekara,

ઊંડા અંધારેથી, પ્રભુ ! પરમ તેજે તું લઈ જા;
મહામૃત્યુમાંથી, અમૃત સમીપે નાથ ! લઈ જા,
તું-હીણો હું છું તો તુજ દરસનાં દાન દઈ જા.

પિતા ! પેલો આઘે, જગત વીંટતો સાગર રહે,
અને વેગે પાણી સકળ નદીનાં તે ગમ વહે;
વહો એવી નિત્યે મુજ જીવનની સર્વ ઝરણી,
દયાના પુણ્યોના, તુજ પ્રભુ ! મહાસાગર ભણી.

થતું જે કાયાથી, ઘડીક ઘડી વાણીથી ઊચરું,
કૃતિ ઇંદ્રિયોની, મુજ મન વિશે ભાવ જ સ્મરું;
સ્વભાવે બુદ્ધિથી, શુભ-અશુભ જે કાંઈક કરું,
ક્ષમાદષ્ટે જોજો, - તુજ ચરણમાં નાથજી ! ધરું.

પ્રભો અંતર્યામી જીવન જીવના દીનશરણા,
પિતા માતા બંધુ, અનુપમ સખા હિતકરણા;
પ્રભા કીર્તિ કાંતિ, ધન વિભવ સર્વસ્વ જનના,
નમું છું, વંદું છું, વિમળમુખ સ્વામી જગતના. 1

સૌ અદભૂતોમાં તુજ સ્વરૂપ અદભૂત નીરખું,
મહા જ્યોતિ જેવું નયન શશીને સૂર્ય સરખું,
દિશાઓ ગુફાઓ પૃથ્વી ઊંડું આકાશ ભરતો,
પ્રભો એ સૌથીએ પર પરમ હું દૂર ઊડતો. 2

પ્રભો તું આદિ છે શુચિ પુરૂષ પુરાણ તું જ છે,
તું સૃષ્ટિ ધારે છે, સૃજન પલટયે નાથ તું જ છે,
અમારા ધર્મોને અહર્નિશ ગોપાલ તું જ છે,
અપાપી પાપીનું શિવ સદન કલ્યાણ તું જ છે. 3

પિતા છે અકાકિ જડ સકળને ચેતન તણો,
ગુરૂ છે મોટો છે જનકૂળ તણો પૂજ્ય તું ઘણો,
ત્રણે લોકે દેવા નથી તું જે સમો અન્ય ન થશે,
વિભુરાયા તુંથી અધિક પછી તો કોણ જ હશે. 4

વસે બ્રહ્માંડોમાં, અમ ઉર વિષે વાસ વસતો,
તું આઘેમાં આઘે, પણ સમીપમાં નિત્ય હસતો,
નમું આત્મા ઢાળી, નમન લળતી દેહ નમજો,
નમું કોટિ વારે, વળી પ્રભુ નમસ્કાર જ હજો. 5

અસત્યો માંહેથી પ્રભુ ! પરમ સત્યે તું લઈ જા,
ઊંડા અંધારેથી, પ્રભુ ! પરમ તેજે તું લઈ જા;
મહામૃત્યુમાંથી, અમૃત સમીપે નાથ ! લઈ જા,

Dwadasa Jyotirlinga Stotra or Dwadasa Jyotir Linga Stotram is a beautiful prayer addressed to the 12 Jyotirlinga shrines of Lord Shiva. Dwadasa Jyotriling Stotra was written by Guru Adi Shankaracharya. Jyotirlingam (also spelled Jyotirling or Jyothir Linga) literally means "Lingam of Light". There are twelve Jyotirlinga shrines in India and the location of the shrines is mentioned in the Shiva Purana. Legends say that Lord Shiva manifested himself on the night of Arudhra festival (Ardra or Arudra darshan festival).

Today is MahaShivRatri, a spiritually resonant day and very dear to Shiv Bhaktas. MahaShivRatri has been my favorite day for devotion and meditation since long. There is something too special about this day, something which is felt and cannot be said.

Sri Rudram is a beautiful Vedic Hymn in praise of Rudra, the Supreme Lord of Tapas.

Anuvaka 1

Om namo bhagavate rudraya

Namaste rudramanyavautota ishhave namah
Namaste astu dhanvane bahubhyamuta te namah

Oh! Rudra Deva! My salutations to your anger and also to your arrows. My salutations to your bow and to your two hands.

Yata ishhuh shivatama shivam babhuva te dhanuh
Shiva sharavya ya tava taya no rudra mridaya

Oh! Rudra! By favor of your arrow, bow, and quiver, which have shed their anger and turned auspicious, please render us happy.

Yaa te rudra shiva tanu raghoraapapakashini
Taya nastanuva shantamaya girishantabhichakashihi

Lord Rudra, you who dwell on Mount Kailas and who confer happiness, by that form of yours which is not terrible, which will not injure us, and which is highly auspicious, behold and illuminate us.

The black-throated Rudra who has assumed the form of the sun that glows red when rising. Him the cowherds, the women carrying water, and all the creatures behold. He, who is seen by all, let Him send happiness to us.

Atho ye asya satvanoaham tebhyoakarannamah

Let my salutations be to the blue-throated one, who has a thousand eyes. I also bow to his followers.

Bhagavan Rudra, loosen the string from both ends of your bow. Remove out of sight the arrows from your hands.

Avatatya dhanustva sahasraxa shateshhudhe
Nishirya shalyanam mukha shivo nah sumana bhava

You having a thousand eyes, and bearing a hundred quivers, after loosening your bow, kindly blunt the edges of your shafts. Assume your peaceful and auspicious Siva form and become well-intentioned towards us.

Vijyam dhanuh kapardino vishalyo banava uta
Aneshannasyeshhava abhurasya nishhangathih

Let the bow of Kapardin, Rudra of the matted locks, be without its string. Let there be no arrows in His quiver. Let His arrows lose their capacity to strike and pierce. Let His scabbard contain little power.

Tayaasmanvishvatastva mayaxmaya paribbhuja

You, Oh showerer of blessings, with your weapons and the bow in Your hand, completely protect us.

Vishnu Sahasranamam Stotram

Vishnu Sahasranama Stotra or Venkateshwara Sahasra Namam Stothram is the devotional Vedic Hymns which explains the thousand (1000) names of Lord Vishnu. Vishnusahasranama Stotra is found in the 149th chapter Anushasanika Parvam of the Great Epic Mahabharatha. The famous warrior Bhishma Pitamaha teaches the Vishnu Sahasranama sloka to Yudishtra, the eldest of Pancha Pandavas.

There is another version of Vishnu Sahasranama Stotra found in the Padma Purana, one of the major eighteen Puranas. However, the Vishnu Sahasranamam found in the Mahabharatha is the most popular version.
